Description

#155 closed enhancement (fixed)

create a rpm for the bjnp cups backend

The bjnp package seems to be working.

#157 closed defect (fixed)

cups/usb failure

I decided to uninstall all cups software - cups, bjnp, ghostscript and gutenprint - and reinstall using the current available packages.

I notice that when selecting just cups and cups-bjnp that various other required packages get selected automatically with the exception of gutenprint. Is that a case of needing to know that you also need gutenprint or alternative drivers eg hplip?

At the end of installation I see an error message displayed by ANPM:-

"An error occurred when trying to download packages.

Rpmdb checksum is invalid:dCDPT(pkg checksums): cups.i686 1:2.1.3-10.oC00-u"

However, ANPM shows cups on the installed page...

I then selected gutenprint packages for installation and had the same error as above regarding gutenprint-libs.i686 0:5.2.12-1.oC00-u

Yet again ANPM shows this package as now installed.

Obviously something wrong somewhere though...

Having uninstalled and re-installed required packages I then set up a cups printer and successfully printed the cups test page from the browser interface.

After cleaning and converting a copy of the cups supplied mg7550.ppd file I installed the ppd file to the psprint.drv and setup an OS/2 printer.

I then printed a 2 page document from e.exe and a 1 page document from OpenOffice.

I then tried printing a 4x6 photo from PMView. This resulted in no print, no error message and on investigation the print job is stuck with a "Forms Mismatch". This is shown in the job properties when opening those properties in the OS/2 printer spooler window.

I deleted the print jobs, checked "Override forms mismatch" in the Postscript Printer Properties and retried printing.
The result is a 4x6 image printed on a section of A4 paper.

I tried setting the form size to 4x6 in the Postscript Printer Properties but that made no difference the image was printed on A4 again.

Looks like the correct paper and cassette tray cannot be selected...

Some clarification: The Canon Pixma MG7550 has 3 trays
CD Tray - CD/DVD printing
Cassette1 - envelopes and photo paper
Cassette2 - A4 paper

In the Postscript Printer Properties only CD Tray and Cassette are listed. The printer automatically switches between Cassette1 and Cassette2 depending on the print job ie if it is an A4 print job Cassette2 is automatically selected; printing to photo paper and envelopes should cause the printer to automatically switch to Cassette1.

The OS/2 printer Postscript Job Properties shows "Cassette" when A4 is selected and "Auto Tray Select" when 4x6 photo paper is selected but fails to select the correct Tray during printing.

Well, the good news is that I can now print to A4 and do not have to reboot after a print job in order to print another document. Now we need to work out what is going wrong with form selection in the OS/2 printer: Is the problem caused by the imported ppd file?

yes it's designed like that

At the end of installation I see an error message displayed by ANPM:-
"An error occurred when trying to download packages.
Rpmdb checksum is invalid:dCDPT(pkg checksums): cups.i686 1:2.1.3-10.oC00-u"

this is only cosmetic and a known issue

After cleaning and converting a copy of the cups supplied mg7550.ppd file I installed the ppd file to the psprint.drv and setup an OS/2 printer.

Can't you create a printer with the cupswizzard as in ArcaOS

I have the feeling this is not a cups issue at all, as somehow the ppd file got not right imported or something similar.
If you have ArcaOS I suggest you open a ticket at their mantis, as Alex might have more ideas why this PPD is/was imported wrong or such.

I was testing on eCS2.2b2 which has cupswizzard installed, possibly an earlier version of the software, which could not create the OS/2 printer simply because psprint.drv did not already have the necessary printer available for selection. Hence the manual intervention to clean, convert and import the ppd file using Alexs updated tools for that job.

I will have to setup ArcaOS on a test system to see if that makes a difference but doubt it will.

I tend to suspect that either the cups generated ppd file is not quite right or the import of that ppd file into the psprint.drv are the cause of the problem.

If the cups included ppd would not be right, this would be a upstream issue we can't fix. If the import is not right, this is a import error. Did you try to report it to Alex? As he has the most knowledge about his importer.

I really recommend to use the latest cupswiz and printman from Alex his web page. As it contains some important fixes for cups.
