Well, I have just discovered, on my machine at least, that DVD burn utility will not burn a DVD successfully if the SATA interface to which the "burner" is connected is configured in AHCI mode.

Do you have the /s parameter?:
/s Enable SCSI emulation for ATAPI units (default = off)

SCSI emulation is required for tools like cdrecord.

/n Enable NCQ (Native Command Queuing) for hard disks

abwillis is correct in that the /s parameter is required for most utilities. The 1.28 driver was tested and works fine for writing DVDs in AHCI mode.
