Add tabbed viewing

Description
The ability to open multiple documents in different tabs instead of windows would be handy and likely conserve some memory (and screen real estate). Ideally, tab bar location should be configurable (top/bottom/side?). The navigation panel should reflect the currently-viewed tab content.

But tabbed viewing should be configurable to 'off'. Not everyone likes tabbed viewing and screen space should not be wasted by the tab panel if not necessary.
