Heiko Nitzsche proposed some changes for the plugin API, he implemented the GBM plugin:

The proposed changes to support rendering to HPS are implemented. I have tested them with the GBM plugin.

The missing error reporting capabilities during rendering a document page are not yet resolved. I'll will close this ticket and open a new one just for this.
