#539 closed enhancement (wontfix)

Release Tool: A vote for better email 'from' entries

Reported by: aschn Owned by: John Small

Description

Actually Release Tool creates a from address like <ygk-r9/a4iiAUwJeoWHOuzbU5w@public.gmane.org>. I guess that's created from the message id. It looks to me me as if just the name is missing, something like 'FM/2 Developers'.

I think the Release Tool should be enhanced to support a better readable name. I won't wonder if some of us have regarded these announcements just as SPAM in the past.

Sorry, the most recent announcements aren't available anymore, so a detailed reproducible example is missing. Gregg, do you have canceled something or is this (not my ticket itself) just a server-related bug?

Are you talking about announcements posted to newsgroups or announcement emails sent to lists?

At first only newsgroup messages, but apparently that applies to both:

Newsgroup:

Path: news.gmane.org!not-for-mail
From: ygk-r9/a4iiAUwJeoWH0uzbU5w@public.gmane.org
Newsgroups: gmane.org.netlabs.fm2.devel
Subject: Request: Commit work for upcoming release.
Date: Sat, 29 Mar 2014 16:30:10 -0700

Web:

It should help to add a name to the 'from' entry and enclose the mail address with angled brackets:

From: FM/2 Development Team <email_address>

Andreas

While the strange email address is a product of the gemane servers, having my real one wouldn't be much better since it still gives you no idea who sent it. Hopefully it will be easy to make the change you suggest above. John is the person who has done most of the work on the release tool, so I will ask him to look at this issue. Thanks

Gregg

Since ReleaseTool already supports the "Full name" <user@…> format for email addresses, no coding changes were made. Releasers have been encouraged to use this format for FROM addresses.
