If not this machine, then any other one. (also, I suspect that the network-attached ICAT is of a no help if your driver hanged or trapped the machine, so I see no alternative to a COM port. And it's cheap to buy a PCI, or PCI-e COM port board, if not integrated. I have a COM port even on my ThinkPad's docking station.)
