Attempt to boot eCS on ASUS Z87-K motherboard hangs in ACPI.PSD

Reported by: jjw Owned by: David Azarewicz
Priority: blocker Milestone: Feedback pending
Component: ACPI PSD Version: 3.22.02

Description

This has been reported as issue 0003592 on the eCS bug tracker. David Azarewicz has recommended reporting it here. In a nutshell, neither of the two versions of eCS already installed on the hard drives nor any of numerous install disks get beyond the display of the boot logo. The Serial Port Log I am including was produced using the eCS2.2beta (2013/05/18 version) install disk using boot with own values to set the ACPI.PSD command line parameters to /DBGLVL=3 /O1 and to turn off display of the boot logo. I am unsure of the version number of the ACPI.PSD included on the eCS2.2beta 2013/05/18 install disk but it is not the latest version.

As I understand it, you cannot get the new motherboard to boot at all in any configuration. Is that correct? It is not good to be swapping motherboards. Do you have a way to update files on the hard disk if I send you a new PSD? If necessary, I can build you a bootable ISO that you can boot and copy a new PSD off of. Let me know which option you need: just the new PSD or a bootable ISO.

Thar is correct. The DFSee bootable disk boots; KNOPPIX boots; no version of eCS or OS/2 that I am able to try boots. Unless I can get the system working in the next hour or two, I am going to have to swap motherboards at least once more because I have to do some work this afternoon that I need for a meeting tonight. I can unplug the sata cable for the relevant drive from the motherboard, turn on the system and enter setup so the drive is powered up, then use the T60 and the NexStar? Universal Adapter to access the drive. I don't like to take drives out of the case unless absolutely necessary because its real easy to snap off the sata connectors on Seagate Barracudas. Either way the PSD should be enough.

Here is a test version: http://88watts.net/download/acpi-test-3.22.03-20131016.7z

I expect that it will work. Let me know.

Excuse me for being dense. What format is this file in?

Sorry, 7zip. It work about 2x better than plain zip

Well it's a considerable improvement. Copied the retail version files to their proper places. Now the system loads most if not all of the base device drivers (they fly by so fast I can't read them) Then it gives a message saying that acpi.psd has expired and the system cannot continue.

Go into your BIOS and set the time and date to the correct time and date.

comment:8 Changed 11 years ago by jjw

Amazing! When I first tried to boot from this brand new board, the date and time were correct, except for being on Eastern time rather than Pacific. With all the ins and outs, the date and time have been correct every time I checked. However this time the date was 2009/01/05!

If I had somehow reset the CMOS by accident, which is next to impossible to do, all the other settings would have gone back to default. Also 2009/01/05 is an unlikely default date. Any idea how this happened?

The good news is that the system is up. Something is wrong with sound. Everything else seems ok. I'll look into the sound problem after tonight's meeting.

Thanks for all your help. How long is this PSD good?

comment:9 Changed 11 years ago by David Azarewicz

I have no idea about the date. Any software can change the date. Perhaps it was one of the CDs you booted.

The test PSD is good for 30 days.

This problem is the same as ticket 587. It was actually solved then. I expected to release a new ACPI package, and a new eCS beta to be out before now, but there have been delays. Sorry.

Here is some followup on the operation of the system on the ASUS Z87-K mother board after several days of tinkering:

Graphics:

Integrated graphics works with Panorama. VDMs only work correctly in full screen sessions. Once started in full screen, a text mode program running in a VDM works correctly but is painfully slow.

Audio:

So far I have been unable to get the onboard Realtek ALC887 HD audio to work. The SBLive produces only static using Sander's driver. It works fine with the latest UNIAUD.

Network:

The driver for the onboard Realtek 8111GR does not load. Others have reported this on the news groups. The 3COM card works fine using Genmac W10B7X9200.

USB:

Works better than on the A8N5X.

Printing:

The Z87-K has no parallel port. To get around this, I purchased a USB to Parallel Printer Cable adapter for $13. When I plugged it in, a USB port was automatically created. The only configuration changes required were to change the port for the HP2100PC and HP2100PS printer objects from LPT1 to USB and to create a connection to the HP2100PC as LPT1.

SMP:

SMP works. Booting takes noticeably longer (about 20-30 seconds). Hyper threading works. With the multi threaded applications I have available for testing, performance is slightly better with hyper threading disabled.

CD/DVD burner:

LG GH24NS90 24X SATA Internal DVD Writer Burner - this unit was purchased in August, 2012 to replace the previous IDE burner which had become unreliable. It worked fine in the old system.

Reading and writing DVDs and data CDs work correctly.

Issues:

Upon inserting a disk it takes between 35 and 60 seconds for the unit to become ready. It used to take 15 to 30 seconds which was already annoyingly long.

Playing and burning audio do not work. RSJ copy wizard reports unsupported function, e.g., Audio Read.

As far as I can see the only differences are:

  1. On the A8N5X motherboard, the drive was connected to an IDE connector using a bidirectional IDE to SATA converter; on the Z87-K the drive is directly connected to an on board SATA connector.
  2. On the A8N5X the driver was DANIS506.ADD; on the Z87-K the driver is OS2AHCI.ADD.

What happens when the 30 day test period expires?

This is a ticketing system for the OS2 ACPI project. Please only post relevant debugging data for OS2 ACPI project and specific for the ticket as described.

Test PSDs stop working after 30 days.
