ACPI 3.04 OS OSI switch

Reported by: Chuck McKinnis Owned by: pasha
Priority: major Milestone: Release version 3.08
Component: ACPI PSD Version: 3.03

Description

ACPI 3.04 and above

I want the OSI and OS switch to now default to" Microsoft Windows NT" based on the following items. Especialy item 2. I see no other route.

  1. Daniela here comment on ACPI and /OS switch to be defaulted to "Microsoft Windows NT".

Item 2

/*

  • OS name, used for the _OS object. The _OS object is essentially obsolete,
  • but there is a large base of ASL/AML code in existing machines that check
  • for the string below. The use of this string usually guarantees that
  • the ASL will execute down the most tested code path. Also, there is some
  • code that will not execute the _OSI method unless _OS matches the string
  • below. Therefore, change this string at your own risk.

this comment is from the freebsd source code (file attached).

1, Have you read freebsd code Pasha that I posted in my ticket. ?

  1. I have this advise from Daniela for at least the _OS switch.
  1. The link I had posted about 1 week to that Linux wiki (and which is

in the ticket).

  1. I have also looked in some AML decompiles and found Microsoft

Windows NT present in also recent machines.

The current FreeBSD sourcecode has this comment in (that I send) is s clear in my opion that OSI and OS flag should match.

But explain this ? What is the use of keeping eCS and eComStation, no BIOS knows it all. I also showed the source code comment to Eugene.

I see no technicall argument standing up anymore to not switch over to Microsoft Windows NT by defailt.

So the ticket remains open.

Sorry,

Roderick
